Truong Dinh Hao

Truong Dinh Hao (1937–2022, Hanoi) graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1973 with a degree in Painting. From the beginning of his career, he devoted himself to the theme of rural life – a current of inspiration that flowed through his entire artistic journey. For Truong Dinh Hao, the Vietnamese countryside was not simply a backdrop but a living reservoir of memory and emotion, a place he returned to again and again as a source of nourishment.

His paintings capture villages in the midst of transformation during Vietnam’s years of reconstruction and opening to the world, vibrating between the pull of tradition and the stirrings of modernity. Hao’s painterly language is characterized by its freedom and spontaneity, foregrounding the more intuitive brushstrokes. This directness gives his work a disarming honesty – a gentle reminder of the enduring spirit of rural Vietnam.
