Oil on canvas

200 x 150 cm

Forming part of the series Lapses of Silence, Adam Goldstein’s work explores the transition of color using a repetitive, unhurried technique that gently builds layers of oil paint. Yet, when the colors come into contact, the tonal dispersion and blur resembles the fading of droplets left behind by spray paint, bringing to mind the trigger between pressure (within the bottle) and release (once we press on the nozzle) that adds a tension to Goldstein’s contemplative process. The illusion of depth, created by two subtle vertical lines akin to sharp folds on a piece of paper that can no longer be smoothed out, plays with the flatness and very material of the canvas itself.
