X-ray film on lightbox

Through Hand in hand, Doan Hoang Lam attempts to visualise the true quality of people, things and events, often hidden beneath the surface. Depicting a scenery of faceless world leaders shaking each other’s hands as they stand in an unknown political gathering, the work looks at the multiple meanings of our body language. Inherently embedded in specific cultural and political contexts, the handshake is loaded with nuanced meanings beyond a mere gesture of agreement in lieu of signed documents and written words. By employing X-ray films as one of the mediums, the work is a sarcastic, clinical depiction of interpersonal and international diplomacy being taken at face value.
