In Albers’ Assembly, Structural/Constellation 2D renderings of 3D objects that were the basis of architectural interventions by Josef Albers – is transposed onto archival documents detailing the buildings and social structures of the First Republic of Vietnam (1955–1963), designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu and President Ngo Dinh Diem. An influential educator, artist and Bahaus emigre to the US, Albers developed his work within the same historical milieu in which the First Republic was constructed. Albers’ Assembly fundamentally entangles modern design with nation-building, drawing parallels between these architectural and political projects.
