Etienne Chambaud

Etienne Chambaud (b. 1980, France) graduated from the Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) in 2003, received his MFA from Villa Arson, Nice in 2005. In 2022, he received a PhD from the SACRe program of PSL University, Paris. Etienne’s artistic practice encompasses a diverse range of media, including exhibitions, digital elements, collages, photography, neon installations, paintings, film, text, and performance. His work frequently challenges traditional boundaries. For instance, Idealism, a geolocated raft adrift in the Atlantic, disrupts established geographical representations. Similarly, his interventions in zoos and exhibitions blur the lines between human and object, subject and environment. Etienne extends his artistic exploration into film, directing works like Counter-History of Separation with Vincent Normand. The film explores historical connections between guillotines and the modern art museum.

Etienne has participated in several residency programs in the US, including EMPAC, Troy, New York, 2017; Fieldwork: Marfa, Marfa, Texas, 2014; International Studio & Curatorial Program, ISCP, Brooklyn, New York, 2011. His notable solo exhibitions includes Lâme, LaM – Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Villeneuve d’Ascq, Lille, France, 2022; Negative Knots, La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, Mullhouse, Grand Est, France, 2018. Etienne also participated in various group exhibitions across Europe and Asia, including The collection: dialogues II Volume 2: Time is an Illusion, Collegium, Arévalo, Spain, 2023; Once Upon a Time, FRAC Collection, Grand Est, France, 2022; Survival in the risk society: ROHKUNSTBAU 26, Schloss Lieberose, Lieberose, Brandenburg, Đức, 2021; IF THE SNAKE, Okayama Art Summit 2019, Okayama, Japan, 2019.
