Nguyen Trinh Thi

Nguyen Trinh Thi (b. 1973, Vietnam) received her MA in Journalism from the University of Iowa in 1999, and her Master of International Pacific Studies from the University of California, San Diego, US in 2005. Her moving image work – including documentary and experimental films, single-channel and video installations – consistently engages with memory and history and reflects on the roles and positions of art and artists in society. Her materials are diverse – from video and photographs shot by herself to those appropriated from various sources including press photos, corporate videos, and classic films; her practice traverses boundaries between film and video art, installation and performance. 

Her notable solo exhibitions include 47 Days, Sound-Less, SPURS Gallery, Beijing, China, 2025; 47 Days, Sound-Less, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan, 2024; 47 Days, Sound-Less, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, 2024; And They Die a Natural Death, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea, UK, 2023; Letters from Panduranga, Daadgalerie, Berlin, Germany, 2016; Letters from Panduranga, CAPC Musée d’art Contemporain de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, 2016; and Letters from Panduranga, Jeu de Paume, Paris, France, 2015. Her works were also included in the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, 2025; La Biennale di Venezia, Vienna, Italy, 2024; documenta 15, Kassel, Germany, 2022; Biennale of Sydney, Sydney, Australia, 2018; and the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia, 2018. Nguyen Trinh Thi was the recipient of several awards, including the Prince Claus Impact Award, 2024; the inaugural Moving Image Commission 2021 from the Han Nefkens Foundation, Mori Art Museum, M+, and Singapore Art Museum; and the Best Emerging Artist Using Digital/Video award from the Prudential Eye Awards, 2016.
