Vuong Van Thao

Vuong Thao (b. 1969, Hanoi) graduated from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1995. With a career spanning more than three decades, he is best known for his multidisciplinary practice that traverses painting, sculpture, and large-scale installations. Thao’s work often engages with themes of urban memory, the transformation of living spaces, and the tension between preservation and modernization. He is particularly recognized for his acclaimed Living Fossils series, in which he “fossilizes” old Hanoi houses as a way of freezing fragments of the city’s rapidly changing landscape.

Over the years, Vuong Van Thao has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Hanoi Award, and was shortlisted for the inaugural Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize in 2008. His works are represented in major collections, including the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM).
