Three country girls
This work belongs to Ha Tri Hieu’s series of self-portraits, often smaller in size and appear more intimate than his paintings of landscapes and people in the countryside. Amongst his signature motifs such as artist smoking or with a brush in hand – depicted in a wonderfully free manner that taunts the audience with a joyful teasing, in Self-portrait we are invited to peer into another side of Hieu’s personal world. With a sense of solitude, it is as if maturity and wisdom have coupled with his boyish naiveté to imbue the work with a vision of a life well lived, bowing into contentment.
