War sketch 3

1971

Work on paper

29 x 40 cm

The Nguyễn Art Foundation collection houses a selection of works by Do Thi Ninh on the theme of war, most of them sketches created in the early 1970s. These drawings offer a distinct and quietly human perspective on wartime – one that turns away from bombs and fire to focus instead on moments of calm and compassion within the life of resistance.

Do Thi Ninh’s linework is fluid yet assured, vigorous yet sensitive. Her sketches portray soldiers and militia members resting, working, sewing, singing, and talking – scenes of ordinary life that persist amid extraordinary circumstances. Each work embodies a feeling of stillness, gentleness, and quiet optimism – a reminder that even in conflict, the resilience and quiet grace of humanity continue to shine through loss and adversity.
