At the forefront of Lap Phuong’s sculptural practice lies a passionate interest in materials, a deep understanding of form-making and a sensitive approach to different modes of display. Her glass sculptures toy with the hybrid of shadows created as light traverses past the glass surface to generate floating, semi-transparent projections. Meanwhile, her sculpted pieces in metal block light with the material’s innate density, casting their own reflections over the surface of the surrounding space. The method of artwork production is equally fascinating, as Lap Phuong would often use metal molds with predetermined shapes to create her glass sculptures. Like Yin and Yang, one cannot exist or thrive without the other. An embodiment of mutual change – a process that coalesces intimately with Lap Phuong’s belief in the “constant transformation of the body and soul”.
