Shaped like an otherworldly shard from another realm, Womb speaks with the quiet clarity of a ghost. A thickly cast glass forms a tapered sculpture that stands upright in delicate balance, as if hovering between the yin and yang of visibility and disappearance, matter and spirit. Grounded in her acute sensitivity to material and form, Lap Phuong’s work plays with the immaterial and invites us not only to look at the sculpture, but through it: the way light fragments and refracts through glass to generate floating, semi-transparent projections that seem to extend beyond its own body. In its narrowing, translucent form, we might glimpse a missile, a memento, a fragile monument to unnamed souls or simply a wandering ghost in the shape of glass.
