Phan Quang
Phan Quang (b. 1976, Vietnam) graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics in 1999. He subsequently worked for several well-known photographers before starting his own commercial photography studio Stop & Go in 2004 and following his current path as a visual artist. Drawn to the power of photography as a medium that can both disturb and reflect truth, Phan Quang’s artistic practice today also encompasses sculpture, installation, performance, and video, often unearthing sociopolitical issues or the micro-narratives hidden by official history.
Phan Quang’s notable exhibitions include The Next Step, San Art, HCMC, Vietnam, 2022; RE/COVER, Blanc Art Space, HCMC, Vietnam 2016; Space/Limit, San Art, HCMC, Vietnam, 2013; The City in the Blue, the 12th Dakar Biennale for Contemporary Art, Dakar, Senegal, 2016; and And That Which Was Always Known, Yavuz Gallery, Singapore, Singapore, 2015. His works are held in the collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, USA; Asia Society Museum, New York, NY, USA; Fukuoka Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan; and Singapore Art Museum, Singapore.
Studio Visit with Phan Quang
In this video interview, Phan Quang shares his transition from documentary to conceptual photography – a medium that has liberated him from prior barriers and allowed for a more genuine way of expressing personal viewpoints. Walking through notable projects, the artist discusses his use of popular symbols and ordinary materials to elicit thoughts on social limitations, the ability of historical narratives to transform, and the resistant life of suppressed communities.
This video is part of a series of interviews by Nguyễn Art Foundation.
