In Old Market, Bui Quang Ngoc returns to one of the themes that define his artistic identity: the rural market – where labor and the human spirit intertwine with everyday life. The women – some standing, others crouching – carrying bamboo baskets and shoulder poles; their conical hats tilted under the sun, appearing as symbols of life and endurance.
His palette is restrained yet deeply evocative: earthy browns and ochres interwoven with touches of green, evoking an atmosphere that feels at once classical and alive. His brushwork – alternately decisive and supple – seems to move continuously, echoing the breath and motion of the figures inhabiting his scene. The sense of realism in Bui Quang Ngoc’s work does not stem from mere depiction, but from a sense of lived energy and inner movement – the hallmark of his painterly approach, which “suggests rather than describes.”
With a firm grasp of composition and a deeply humane gaze, Bui Quang Ngoc captures not only the image of a market but the spirit of an era. As he once reflected: “All my life, I have lived alongside the barefooted, the laborers who carried heavy loads, those who devoted their youth to the struggle for national liberation. I cannot bear not to bring them into my art to present them to the public… My artistic subject is humanity – the people I see in motion every day, the people whose lives I feel as part of society’s pulse.”
