River at Dawn

2014

Oil on canvas

100 x 120 cm

A drifting boat, a distant river, a sky steeped in stillness – scenery that feels at once near and far, real and dreamlike. Hong Viet Dung expresses fragments of memory onto the canvas, creating landscapes suffused with serenity and the quietude of an uncluttered world. Cloaked in soft light and mystery, his muted palette of pale tones and broad, simplified forms fills the surface; details of figures, landscapes, and objects are nearly effaced, their contours dissolving gently into one another.

Reduction is both a technique and a philosophy for Dung – a manifestation of his meditative temperament, his Buddhist devotion, and his awareness of life’s impermanence. In their distilled simplicity, his paintings invite silence and contemplation, offering a space where the viewer may commune not with the external world, but with the inner self.
