Requiem

1999

Acrylic, papier mâché on canvas

180 x 540 cm

Nguyen Trung has repeatedly used Requiem as his subject matter for the past 5 years. His inspiration comes from the two masterpieces Requiem by Johann Sebastien Bach and The Requiem in D minor, K 626 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This time, Trung uses much more powerful and bold prime colors – red and yellow. The requiem now is not a whisper from the inner soul but rather a forceful scream. The papier mache dots lining up on the canvas represent the sound effects and movements. Trung uses brushstrokes, colors and textures to present his interpretation of music into visual images and representation, which adds another sound dimension to the already existing visual dimension.
