Dragon Dance

2014

Oil on canvas

115 x 147 cm

Forming part of Mortal Body, Doan Hoang Lam’s solo exhibition in 2014, Dragon Dance, Procession 6, Procession 4 and Procession 2 are inspired by the artist’s reflections on the human condition in the modern motions of life. On his artistic quest to discover the essence of human nature, Lam asks: suppose human nature is ultimately the same, then what does then our exterior, our outer “mortal bodies” look like? Do they have more features in common than differences? Weaknesses, inferiority, pettiness, mediocrity and ignorance in the face of the pressure and repression imposed upon us by the society we have made for ourselves, are revealed both clearly and subtly through these paintings.
