A talk on curating with Sohrab Mohebbi – the Director of SculptureCenter
Art resists classification and categorization; expands the boundaries of perception and contours of imagination; and defies definitions, while curating is institutionally tasked to circumscribe, label, categorize, and assign singularity to multiplicity. As such, the challenge of curating as a discipline is how to unframe. The exhibitions that matter are those that, as Clarice Lispector said about writing, “try to open up somehow.”
In the talk entitled Notes to self: How not to make an exhibition, speaker Sohrab Mohebbi – Director of SculptureCenter – shared “a collection of thoughts, quotations, and misinterpretations that I have been gathering in the past few years while working as a curator. Some of these ideas were tried in exhibition form, or have guided my thinking in one way or another.” The discussion explored various definitions of art as well as constrained disciplines within curatorial frameworks, facilitating a dialogue around the challenges in this field to go beyond the current artistic paradigms.
