Contemporary Art’s Histories in Vietnam: A Southern Perspective

As part of Art as Research, an inter-institutional research exchange between Fulbright University Vietnam and Konstfack – University of Arts, Crafts and Design, we had the pleasure of hosting a screening program and a discussion with guest artists Tram Luong and Lim Sokchanlina.
The films selected for this screening program exemplify an almost anthropological approach to working with the moving image. Spanning a wide range of historical interests, including urbanization, nation-building, ecology, and decolonization, the artists’ encounters with these subjects demonstrate an inclination towards durational art, signifying intellectual shifts in thinking while revealing how uncertainty and humility can act as premises for contemporary artistic practice. The film program and ensuing discussion will focus on the sociological and anthropological methods used by the artists, as well as how methods from the social sciences inform their aesthetic perspectives and expand their visual scope – all to shed light on how art can function as a research medium.

This program is part of an inter-institutional research exchange between Fulbright University Vietnam and Konstfack – University of Arts, Crafts and Design, funded by a Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) Mobility Grant for Internationalization. It also joins the educational programming for Illuminated Curiosities, an exhibition organized by Nguyen Art Foundation.
