Nghệ thuật đương đại thường được hiểu trong tương quan với chủ nghĩa và nghệ thuật hiện đại, và được xem như một phản hồi đến loại hình nghệ thuật đến trước. Trong bối cảnh của Việt Nam thì sao, khi đa phần nghệ thuật trong giai đoạn hiện đại đi theo hướng hiện thực xã hội chủ nghĩa? Hiện thực xã hội chủ nghĩa là một loại hình nghệ thuật với những lý thuyết, hệ thống và thẩm mỹ tính chuyên biệt. Bối cảnh này ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển của nghệ thuật đương đại ra sao, truyền cảm hứng cho phương pháp sáng tác của nghệ sĩ như thế nào? Thông qua ví dụ thực hành của nghệ sĩ Trần Lương, Nguyễn Trinh Thi, Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng và The Propeller Group, buổi trò chuyện này sẽ đưa ra những đề xuất về cách xem, đọc, nghĩ và hiểu tác phẩm nghệ thuật đương đại dựa trên bối cảnh lịch sử thú vị của Việt Nam.

Phoebe Scott là Senior Curator (hay Giám tuyển có thâm niên), và Giám tuyển của bộ phận Ấn phẩm Nghiên cứu tại National Gallery Singapore. Các dự án giám tuyển của cô gồm có Giữa Những Tuyên Ngôn và Những Giấc Mơ: Nghệ thuật của Đông Nam Á từ thế kỷ 19 (Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century) (2015–đang diễn ra), triển lãm đầu tiên của cụm gallery Đông Nam Á thuộc National Gallery Singapore; Tái định hình Chủ nghĩa Hiện Đại: Hội hoạ từ Đông Nam Á, châu Âu và Xa hơn nữa (Reframing Modernism: Painting from Southeast Asia, Europe and Beyond) (2016); và gần đây nhất, Những Khách thể Thân quen: Emiria Sunassa, Eduardo Masferré và Yeh Chi Wei, thập niên 1940–70) (2022–2023). Cô cũng là Giảng viên Thỉnh giảng về lịch sử nghệ thuật tại Trường Đại Học Quốc Gia Singapore. Trước khi tham gia National Gallery Singapore, Phoebe nhận bằng Tiến sĩ với chủ đề về nghệ thuật Việt Nam hiện đại.

‘Worker, Farmer, Solider, Repeat? Contemporary Art After Socialist Realism’
Contemporary art is often understood in relation to modernism, and seen as a response to the kind of art that came before it. But what does this mean when, as in the case of Vietnam, much of the art of the modern period was socialist realism? Socialist realism was an art form with its own theories, aesthetics and systems. How does this historical background affect the development of Vietnamese contemporary art, or the way individual artists have approached their practice? This talk will highlight case studies from within Vietnamese contemporary art – including works by Tran Luong, Nguyen Trinh Thi, Nguyen Manh Hung and The Propeller Group – proposing readings of the artworks informed by the history of socialist realism, as well as considering how contemporary art has developed elsewhere in the socialist world.

Phoebe Scott is a Senior Curator and Curator of Research Publications at National Gallery Singapore. Her curatorial projects include Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century (2015–ongoing), the inaugural exhibition of the National Gallery’s Southeast Asia galleries; Reframing Modernism: Painting from Southeast Asia, Europe and Beyond (2016); and most recently, Familiar Others: Emiria Sunassa, Eduardo Masferré and Yeh Chi Wei, 1940s–70s (2022–2023). She is also an Adjunct Lecturer in art history at the National University of Singapore. Prior to joining the Gallery, Phoebe completed her PhD on the subject of modern Vietnamese art.
